Investigation into Luc Tuymans Drawing has been integral to Tuymans’ artistic practice from the start. Sketches, watercolours and other small-scale works form the bedrock of his work for they constitute, for him, a way of thinking through an idea. Important features of Tuymans’ artistic approach can be found in these preparatory pieces such as his voluntary choice of low-quality materials and his incorporation of found elements. Such works are both visual preparations for later paintings and exteriorisations of thought processes. As Tuymans said in an interview with Josef Helfenstein in 1997: ‘drawing is particularly important because I become mentally involved in the work and the picture’. ...

Investigation into Van Gogh’s breakdown Van Gogh’s deep admiration for the Barbizon artists, especially Jean-François Millet, significantly shaped his decision to focus on rural life in his art. During the winter of 1884–85, while staying with his parents in Nuenen, he created over forty studies of peasant heads. These studies culminated in his first large-scale, multifigured composition, The Potato Eaters (Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam). In this raw depiction of a peasant family during mealtime, Van Gogh sought to convey that they “have tilled the earth themselves with the same hands they are putting in the dish.” The dark color scheme and rough application of paint are characteristic of works from Van Gogh’s Nuenen period. ...

Investigation into Orlando di Lasso A prominent figure of the late Renaissance, Lasso was renowned for his extraordinary productivity, versatility, and universal appeal as a composer. He created over 2,000 pieces across all the major Latin, French, Italian, and German vocal genres of his era, including 530 motets, 175 Italian madrigals and villanellas, 150 French chansons, and 90 German lieder. Interestingly, none of Lasso’s works were strictly instrumental, nor is there evidence that he composed any—a surprising omission for such a prolific artist during a time when instrumental music was gaining prominence throughout Europe.
