Ruven Afanador, a renowned Colombian-born photographer, is best known for his book Torero (2001), which features a striking collection of black-and-white portraits of matadors from Mexico, Colombia, Peru, and Spain. “Contrasts are beautiful; I like to translate that into my photography. Opulence is a very important part of my work, but I find great opulence and drama in a stark and minimal photograph,” he once explained.

Born in 1959 in Bucaramanga, Colombia, Afanador moved to Michigan at the age of 14 with his family. After completing high school, he relocated to Washington, D.C., where he began his journey as a fashion photographer. In 1987, he moved to Milan and developed his signature style, photographing models in settings such as alleys, streets, church steps, and palazzos. Returning to the United States in 1990, Afanador worked with prominent publications like Vogue, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times. He currently resides and works in New York City.
